Legananny Dolmen
Legananny is perhaps the most famous and the most photographed dolmen in Northern Ireland and one of the better known ones in Europe. A dolmen is a megalithic ancient tomb dating from very ancient times. There are thousands of dolmens and megaliths in Ireland and across Europe. You can read more about them by clicking here. The dolmen is situated about 10 miles south east from Banbridge a little off the A50 which leads from Banbridge to Castlewellan and on to Newcastle. It is located on the slopes of Slieve Croob.
The best way to visit is a part of a bigger tour that can involve any of Slieve Croob, the Brontë Homeland, the Mourne Mountains, the coastal town of Newcastle, Banbridge, among others. It is easily accessible in terms of the roads leading to it. However, it is situated in farmlands in the midst of a maize of small roads and while there are signs once you leave the main road A50 it is easy to get lost. If you do get lost don’t hesitate to ask for directions. In once instance when we stopped to ask, a kindly gentleman got in his car and led us all the way to it.
The view from the dolmen of Legananny is very beautiful. The surrounding farms and green fields and the Mourne Mountains not too far in the distance make for an idyllic location. The view is especially beautiful on a slightly overcast and misty day as it brings a sense of mystery well fitting to the dolmen itself and reflective of a typical Northern Ireland landscape on a typical of days.
